Dental Hygienist Schools in Pennsylvania

Thinking of becoming a dental hygienist in Pennsylvania? If you already live in Pennsylvania, you know that it’s one of the most exciting states in the Mid-Atlantic region. If you’re not in Pennsylvania yet, and wondering whether you’d like to study and work there, here is a little bit you may not know about the 6th most populous state in the US!

As one of the 13 original founding states, Pennsylvania was named for William Penn. Its motto is, “Virtue, Liberty, and Independence,” and it is known as both the Keystone State and the Quaker State. With such a rich history, Pennsylvania boasts landmarks like Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. Pennsylvania is also where the historic Battle of Gettysburg was fought during the Civil War.

If you live in Pennsylvania, you can enjoy the state’s many historic sites. You can also visit destinations like the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Carnegie Museums. Other popular attractions include the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium, ZOOAMERICA, and more than a dozen amusement parks. Pennsylvania is home to a number of professional sports teams, including the Pittsburgh Steelers, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh Pirates, and Philadelphia 76ers.

Career Outlook and Salary

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), dental hygienists are in high demand throughout the country, and demand is increasing much faster than average at a rate of 33%. As of 2012, there were 192,800 dental hygienists throughout the US. But how much of that demand is focused in Pennsylvania? And how much money can you expect to make there?

Pennsylvania has more than 9,170 dental hygienists hard at work! On average, those hygienists make $60,750 each year, which comes out to around $29.21 per hour. This actually amounts to a little less than the average pay reported by the BLS.

So Pennsylvania may not pay as much to dental hygienists as some other states, but the demand is high compared to many other states. In fact, Pennsylvania employs more dental hygienists than most other states in the country! This is not surprising, considering the high population density of PA. So if what you are looking for is steady work, Pennsylvania is probably a great state to choose for your education and employment.
